Tamerlan Tsarnaev Dead: Boston Bomber Was Killed by Younger Brother, Police Chief Describes Last Scene [VIDEO]
More details have emerged about the dead of the first Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, which occurred in the first hours of Friday in a residential street in Watertown, MA.
Tsarnaev had been captured wounded but alive by police officers in Boston in the middle of a fierce shooting in the street, but his younger brother drove over him and killed him.
Police Chief Edward Deveau described to CNN how the events unfolded that night. He said that the two suspects were driving two cars, including one black Mercedes SUV that they hijacked. A single police officer spotted the cars and requested backup when the cars stopped and the two suspect brothers got off the cars.
"They jump out of the car and unload on our police officer," Deveau told CNN. "They both came out shooting -- shooting guns, handguns. He's under direct fire, very close by. He has to jam it in reverse and try to get himself a little distance."
At one point in the middle of the shooting, Tamerlan came directly toward police.
"He all of a sudden comes out from under cover and just starts walking down the street, shooting at our police officers, trying to get closer," Deveau described.
"Now, my closest officer is five to 10 feet away, and they're exchanging gunfire between them. And he runs out of ammunition -- the bad guy -- and so one of my police officers comes off the side and tackles him in the street," he said.
"We're trying to get him handcuffed. There's two or three police officers handcuffing him in the street -- the older brother. At the same time, at the last minute -- they obviously have tunnel vision, it's a very, very stressful situation -- one of them yells out, 'Look out!' and here comes the black SUV, the carjacked car, directly at them. They dive out of the way, and he (the younger brother) drives over his brother and drags him a short distance down the street."
Tamerlan was pronounced dead at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center .
A graphic photo of his dead body was leaked Friday evening showing gunshot wounds. It is not known who has leaked the photo, but it has already been viewed by thousands as it went viral on sites such as Reddit.
His younger brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was arrested Friday night after police found him hiding inside a boat. He is currently in the hospital "clinging for his life," according to various media reports.
