It has been revealed that the late Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev would often call his wife names, and act on his erratic and violent behavior, her friends told National Public Radio's Laura Sullivan.
Three women who were close friends and roommates of Katherine Russell, and also knew Tsarnaev for several years while they were in college, spoke to the reporter about the 26-year-old suspected bomber.
They said Tsarnaev was "very controlling and very manipulative" of Russell, and said he was "combative and angry," according to the Sullivan. Tsarnaev would often call Russell names such as "slut" and "prostitute." The three women also recalled fights Tsarnaev and Russell would get into where he would sometimes throw furniture or other objects.
Katherine was an all-American girl who had converted from Christianity to Islam after meeting her husband.
Katherine Russell Tsarnaev found out that her husband was a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing - that took place on April 15 - by seeing it on TV, according to her lawyer Amato DeLuca.
He added details about days after the bombing, saying Tamerlan "was home" when his wife left for work on the last day she said she saw him alive.
'We're deciding what we want to do and how we want to approach this,' DeLuca said.
When asked if anything seemed amiss to Katherine after the bombings, he replied, "Not as far as I know," adding that she did not suspect Tamerlan of anything.
"When this allegedly was going on, she was working, and had been working all week to support her family," he told the AP. According to her lawyer, Katherine has been working 70 to 80 hours, seven days a week, as a home health care aide. While was worked, Tamerlan cared for their 3-year-old daughter Zahara.
Katherine, 24, has been staying with her family since her husband was killed.
The Russell family is devastated by what happened. Katherine's parents, Judith and Warren, issued a statement following the horrific terror attack: "Our daughter has lost her husband today, the father of her child. We cannot begin to comprehend how this horrible tragedy occurred. In the aftermath of the Patriot's Day horror, we know that we never really knew Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Our hearts are sickened by the knowledge of the horror he has inflicted."
