Emmet Till's Family Lil Wayne: Relatives Demand Further Apology From Rapper
The family of Emmett Till is not satisfied by Lil Wayne's apology. That could be because the rapper never actually says he is sorry in his message to the relatives.
Lil Wayne came under fire for his lyrics which include a very insensitive reference to the Emmett Till lynching that occurred in Mississippi in 1955.
"Beat that pussy up like Emmett Till," the rapper says in the song "Karate Chop."
"It has come to my attention that lyrics from my contribution to a fellow artist's song has deeply offended your family," the rapper wrote, according to the Daily News. "As a father myself, I cannot imagine the pain that your family has had to endure. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge your hurt, as well as the letter you sent to me via your attorneys."
Lil Wayne has agreed to remove the line from his music.
"While it's commendable that he has vowed to respect the legacy of Emmett Till and his memory to 'not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in his music,' this statement falls short of an apology, as none is mentioned," said Airickca Gordon-Taylor, executive director of the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation, according to Rolling Stone.
According to the Associated Press, Rev. Al Sharpton is attempting to get the two parties together for a discussion.
"It was not an apology. ... However, I think it's a start, Gordon-Taylor told the Associated Press. "I think the door is now open for us to have a sit-down, to have a dialogue."
It remains to be seen if Lil Wayne will make further efforts at an apology.
