Hotmail Officially Dead and Accounts Rolled Into Outlook [VIDEO]
Microsoft announced on Thursday that Hotmail is officially history.
The new Hotmail is now Outlook, with Outlook.com Group Program Manager Dick Craddock making the announcement via a blog post that read as follows:
"We want to give a huge 'Thank you' to all of you who have supported Hotmail over the years, for some of you, that’s going back as far as 1996… When we launched the original preview of Outlook.com, we knew that we were committing to building the world’s best email… We’re excited to have you join Outlook.com as we write the next chapter in modern email from Microsoft.”
Hotmail was used for over 16 years and was the most popular online email service in the last 90’s, although Yahoo email and Gmail came years later as competition.
Having added the users from Hotmail, Outlook.com now has more than 400 million active accounts, WebPro News reported. The Outlook team was able to transfer 150 petabytes of email in just 6 weeks while maintaining Hotmail users’ preferences and contacts, Craddock said. A petabyte is the multiple of a unit byte for digital information.
Hotmail users will still be able to use their @hotmail.com email address', but will instead be accessing their inbox from the Outlook website.
