Jodi Arias Trial Live Stream WATCH ONLINE Sentencing; Cruel Manner Testimony For Death Penalty Pledge Begins Following Suicide Watch
The live court session for the next phase of Jodi Arias' first-degree murder trial - the aggregation phase - will begin at 1 p.m. EST on May 15.
(The live court session can be watched online via the free live stream below.)
Wednesday's court session is the first since Arias was found guilty of first degree murder on May 8 for the 2008 killing of her on-and-off lover Travis Alexander.
Arias was admitted to Lower Buckeye Jail's psychiatric ward and placed on suicide watch shortly after she was found guilty. Twenty minutes after the verdict was read aloud in the Maricopa County courtroom, Arias spoke to Phoenix, Arizona's Fox 10 News about how she felt regarding her conviction. Arias said she would rather "get death than life" and "die sooner than later" than spend the rest of her life in jail.
Prosecutor Juan Martinez will present evidence to the jury during the aggregation phase to prove Alexander's crime was committed in a cruel manner. "Cruel manner" is when a victim suffered physical and or mental pain, according to Arizona law. Martinez will also try to prove that Arias knew that Alexander would suffer. Martinez is expected to call in medical examiner Dr. Kevin Horn to testify and prove that Alexander suffered before he died based on the autopsy report.
According to the autopsy report, Arias stabbed her victim over 27 times, slit his throat from ear to ear and shot him in the head. The report showed that Alexander had cuts on his hands which were wounds caused by trying to prevent Arias from stabbing repeatedly.
Arias' defense attorneys will also present evidence to debunk the claim that Alexander did not suffer. They may have the convicted killer testify again - she testified for 18 days during the first phase of the trial -and if she does, she will beg for leniency that the jury does not give her the death sentence.
The jury will then decide based on testimonies from both sides if Alexander suffered and died in a cruel manner.
If Arias is found not guilty, the case will end and the judge will sentence her in 30 to 60 days. During the sentencing the judge will decide and announce if Arias is given life in prison with or without parole.
If the jury decides that Arias is guilty for committing the crime in a cruel manner, Arias and her defense team, family members and or friends will plead for leniency and ask that she not die by lethal injection. If this happens, the jury will have to make a decision for the third time - if she should be sentenced to life in prison or death.
