'Angry Birds' Movie Release Date in 2016, Video Game Film Due In 3-D
If you haven't grown tired of slingshotting cantankerous birds at helmeted pigs, then you will be excited to hear that Angry Birds will be hitting the big screen in 2016.
The videogame, which launched in 2009, was recently developed into a animated series Angry Birds Toons and has now been picked up by Sony for a 3-D extravaganza, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"Every studio in town would love to add Angry Birds to their slate," Sony said in statement, according to Forbes. "There are few titles out there that bring this kind of excitement, brand awareness and built-in audience to the table."
With merchandising for the game seeing an increase, Rovio, the media company that created the game, is looking to ride the wave of the fad as far as it can. Forbes reports that the games have been downloaded 1.7 billion times and the new animated shorts have seen 150 million views since they premiered in March.
However, may are wondering if Angry Birds will have the staying power necessary to still be relevant by time the film comes to theaters.
"There's definitely an opportunity to make that transition from game to movie," says Numbers website analyst Bruce Nash, according to the Los Angeles Times. "The name recognition will get people to watch the trailer. Of course, if it just looks like it's 90 minutes of birds crashing into things, then there might be a problem."
According to Reuters, David Maisel (Iron Man) and John Cohen (Despicable Me) will produce.
Hopefully, for the sake of the films creators, Angry Birds wont go the way of the Furby.
