'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Will Be Last, Producer: Frank Doegler Says
Game of Thrones producer Frank Doegler projects that the show will last seven seasons.
Doegler told press at the BAFTA Television Awards last week that popular fantasy drama Game of Thrones will continue to air on HBO for seven seasons.
The TV series, based on George RR Martin's fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire is currently in its third season. Doegler explained:
"[The number of seasons] is being discussed as we speak. The third season was the first half of book three; season four will be the second part of book three. George RR Martin has written books four and five; six and seven are pending."
Since the series is already into its adaptation of book three, it will quickly catch up with the books, of which Martin has written five out of the proposed seven.
In order to fit the entire book series' narrative within seven seasons, producers will need to potentially condense two books into one season, though io9 suggests that books four and five are essentially one long book anyway.
However, Doegler suggested that the show would have to survive first in order to produce its planned seasons: "I would hope that, if we all survive and if the audience stays with us, we'll probably get through to seven seasons."
Fortunately, they won't have to worry considering the show consistently tops cable ratings on Sunday nights. The show was renewed by HBO for a fourth season shortly after the third season premiere.
Game of Thrones chronicles the lives of over 20 characters living in a medieval fantasy world as they fight for their particular family's right to the Iron Throne.
Over the next few weeks, Game of Thrones will be airing the last three episodes of its third season. It airs Sundays at 9:00 pm on HBO, with repeats airing at 11:00 pm.
