Lizz Winstead Twitter Joke About Oklahoma Tornado Stirs Controversy, 'Daily Show' Co-Creator Slammed
The Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead has been slammed for sending out a controversial tweet about the Oklahoma tornado.
On Monday afternoon, Winstead posted:
"This tornado is in Oklahoma so clearly it has been ordered to only target conservatives."
With multiple citizens reported dead already, the joke was seen as off-color, but Winstead lashed out at her critics. The 52-year old comedian tweeted: "If Its not OK to YOU for me to combine news stories to point out hypocrisy AND Im not making fun of victims u shld Unfollow."
Eventually, Winstead deleted the original tweet, but Mediaite managed to screen-capture it. The tweet had 143 retweets and 36 favorites.
Winstead tweeted two other tornado-themed jokes on Monday, which she has not deleted: "How long has Obama known about this tornado?" and "Tornado just bumped me from MSNBC #Benghazi"
Later, she apologized for her jokes, tweeting: "Made a political joke, Twas before devastation revealed. In hindsight, had I understood, I would have refrained. Beyond sorry. #LetMeHaveIt,"
Since receiving backlash, the comedian has tweeted support for donations to victims of the tornado.
Winstead was the co-creator and former head writer of The Daily Show and often acted as a Correspondent for the show. She has made appearances on liberal talk shows like The Ed Show and The Joy Behar Show. She has also appeared on Comedy Central Presents, a stand-up comedian showcase.
The tornado that devastated Oklahoma on Monday has killed at least 24 people as of Tuesday afternoon, according to The New York Times.
