Critics chose to honor a variety of shows with nominations for the 2013 Annual Critics Choice TV Awards.

The Big Bang Theory was recognized in most of the comedy categories totaling six nominations, including one for Best Comedy Series. Actors Jim Parsons, Simon Helberg, Kaley Cuoco and Melissa Rauch were given nominations for their work on the show.

Horror anthology series American Horror Story also received six nominations in the miniseries categories for its second season, Asylum. HBO received the most nominations for their programs: 21 in total.

Parks and Recreation actress Retta will be hosting this third annual awards show, presented by the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. The ceremony will be held on June 10, streaming live for the first time on UStream.

The Big Bang Theory will be competing against Louie, The Middle, New Girl, Parks and Recreation and Veep in the Best Comedy Series category. The new FX drama The Americans was nominated for Best Drama Series along with other critic favorites Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife and Homeland.

Curiously missing from the list is AMC's period drama Mad Men. The show has often been regarded as a critic favorite (this organization itself gave it many nominations last year). This year, however, only Elisabeth Moss returned for a nomination. Actors Jon Hamm and John Slattery, and the show itself, was left out.

In the Best Movie or Miniseries category, American Horror Story: Asylum was nominated alongside Behind the Candelabra, The Crimson Petal and the White, The Hour, Political Animals and Top of the Lake.

American Horror Story also received nominations for actors Jessica Lange, James Cromwell, Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe.

The organization's president, Joey Berlin, said: "This year's nominations reflect the expanding definition of television, with nominated programs and performances representing new platforms as well as broadcast and cable, Critics Choice President Joey Berlin said. "As evidenced by nominations for the third annual Critics' Choice Television Awards, television continues to be a rich and diverse source of high quality entertainment."
