Melissa McCarthy Fires Extra on Set of New Film 'Tammy' For Abusive Behavior?
Actress Melissa McCarthy fired an extra on the set of her new film Tammy.
Tammy is the directorial debut for McCarthy and TMZ reported that she fired an extra who had brought her child on set. The extra was a woman in her 20's who disrupted production after loudly telling her child to quiet down.
Losing her patience, the extra allegedly "jerked the child up in the air by the wrist," which McCarthy witnessed in full. McCarthy promptly got some assistants to escort the extra off the premises with her child, saying she wouldn't tolerate such abuse on her set.
The extra's identity has not been revealed to the public and McCarthy's representatives did not comment on the matter. The incident happened in Wilmington, NC, where McCarthy was filming on location. The production was filming alongside a lake with over 200 extras when the incident occurred.
The actress is directing Tammy with her husband, Ben Falcone. They also wrote the screenplay together.
The film's synopsis reads: "After losing her job and learning that her husband has been unfaithful, a woman [Tammy] hits the road with her profane, hard-drinking grandmother."
McCarthy is playing the titular character alongside stars Susan Sarandon, Dan Aykroyd, Kathy Bates and Allison Janney. Shirley MacLaine was originally attached to play McCarthy's grandmother, but the role went to Sarandon instead. The comedy is set to be released in theaters July 2, 2014.
The actress told Entertainment Weekly about the film's plot, "I love that there's something that happens in a car with people where all bets off. You're off your rhythm, off your schedule, you're forced to be completely adaptable or die."
McCarthy recently starred in Identity Thief with Jason Bateman, which made over $130 million at the box office. She also stars in The Heat with Sandra Bullock, which will come out on June 28.
