Jose Canseco Under Investigation In Las Vegas For Sexual Assault
Former Major League Baseball player Jose Canseco is a person of interest in a sexual assault under investigation, according to police in Las Vegas.
The city's Metropolitan Police Department issued a statement Wednesday stating that they are "currently investigating" the case and Canseco is considered a suspect in the case.
"At this time no charges have been filed and our investigation remains ongoing," police said. "Per department policy neither victim information or investigation details are available for release."
Canseco has agreed to speak to police sources. However, as the case unfolded, he also used Twitter to speak out on the matter, perhaps in an ethically questionable way. In a series of now-deleted tweets, Canseco posted the apparent accuser's first and last name, phone number, and picture, along with tweets such as "Will u take a polygraph cause I will" and "Lets play truth or dare. I dare [redacted victim's name] to tell the truth."
Canseco has been a controversial figure in the years since he left pro baseball. The year 2005 saw the publication of his memoir, Juiced, in which he acknowledged his use of performance enhancements and called out players and others by name for continuing to use steroids and other drugs in the sport. Some allegations Canseco made have since been proven true, and four years later he came out with the book Vindicated.
Canseco has also had several previous run-ins with the law. According to a 60 Minutes episode from 2009, the baseball player was charged with domestic violence and served jail time after hitting his estranged wife in November 1997. He was also arrested along with his brother for attacking two tourists in a Miami night club in 2001; one victim's nose was broke, while the other was left needing 20 stitches in his lip.
