Debra Messing revealed the guilt she felt about her recent divorce in an exclusive interview.

The actress opened up about her divorce from writer Daniel Zelman in the June issue of More magazine. The 44-year old actress was married to Zelman for 10 years. The couple divorced in June of 2012. Messing expressed her regret, saying that they tried to make it work:

"We both wanted it to last forever, and it's a sad thing that it wasn't able to go the course," she said.

The couple tried to accommodate for their working on opposite coasts for three years, but they ultimately weren't able to. Messing said that most of her guilt was due to their nine-year-old son, Roman.

"Part of me will always contend with guilt that I wasn't able to give my son the fantasy that my parents were able to give me," she said.

She added, "We really tried. We made sacrifices and compromises, and in the end we both realized that we like the day-to-day domestic life."

The couple vowed to keep their divorce civil for the sake of their son. A rep for Messing said, "They remain best of friends and fully committed to raising their son together."

Messing added: "Now we are co-parenting beautifully ... We had Thanksgiving together. In my mind, we will be a nuclear family forever."

To cope with the divorce, the actress admitted, "I would just start shoveling chocolate in my face because I'd been eating brown rice and salmon for weeks trying to fit into a dress that was a sample size."

Most recently, Messing starred in NBC's musical drama Smash, which was cancelled this month after two seasons. The actress shot to fame through her role as Grace Adler in Will & Grace. She won an Emmy for the role in 2003.

Messing will be starring in the TV movie Mother's Day, which is set to premiere in 2013.
