'The Last of Us 2' Release, News: Game Focuses on Cycle of Hatred & Violence; No Happy Ending for Joel & Elie [Video]
Naughty Dog's "The Last of Us 2" director Neil Druckmann is now giving fans more details about the anticipated game. Druckmann has confirmed recently about the ending of the game and he also talked about what takes place in the sequel.
"The Last of Us" was never meant for happy endings. But on a subjective note, the game still concluded on a positive note with the main characters, Joel and Ellie, sticking with each other to the very end. Now it seems like, they may not be so lucky when the game comes around for another installment.
Neil Druckmann spoke about "The Last of Us 2" while his interview with Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth. During the interview, Druckmann has revealed the greatest theme of the game and said via Starz Post that while the first game focused on "irrational love of a parent to child," the second game will focus more on "cycle of violence and hatred."
Certainly, the theme is rather well-known in the trailer that was released on 2016. The released trailer of "The Last of Us 2" showed Ellie, "The Last of Us" central character, singing while playing the guitar. As Joel enters the house where Ellie was, the video showed dead body filled with blood throughout the house. By the end, Ellie says she will "kill every last one of them."
This has also led to the speculations that Joel was dead and Ellie was seeking revenge for him. However, Joel appeared briefly on "The Last of Us 2" trailer and fans believe that the girl is only hallucinating.
Apart from the strong theme of revenge and violence, Neil Druckmann has also mentioned that "The Last of Us 2" won't have a happy ending. Several reports also mentioned that the director did not feel the need to create a "happy ending" for the game.
While the next section will deal with fan theories, it is important to know that Naughty Dog has had quite a history of misleading fans. Druckmann did admit in a PlayStation Magazine that the trailer for the first game, "The Last of Us" was indeed meant to mislead players, Games Radar reported.
As for a release date, Druckmann has reportedly confirmed that creative work on the "The Last of Us 2" is still ongoing. However, nothing has been announced officially yet.
