Ben & Jerry's Ingredient Usage, Company Will Stop Adding Genetically Modified Chemicals By 2014 [VIDEO]
Ben & Jerry’s will be cutting an ingredient from its ice cream come the end of the year.
The ice cream company plans to cut genetically-modified organisms from its products. As of now, the majority of Ben & Jerry’s ingredients come from non-GMO sources.
The Huffington Post reported that taking out this ingredient will be a complicated procedure because one flavor sometimes has up to 40 ingredients and the separation process would be complex.
Genetically modified foods, made to resist insecticides and herbicides, have sparked controversy in the United States and other countries. Supporters of GMO’s claim the plants improve crop production and increase the global food supply, according to the report.
Critics argue that the chemicals can harm the environment and lead to health problems. Protestors on May 25 demonstrated against Monsanto, a company associated with GMO’s and its genetically modified foods.
Ben & Jerry's made the announcement less than a year after residents of California voted against Proposition 37, a ballot initiative that requires foods that are genetically-modified to be labeled as so. Monsanto and The Hershey Co, as well as other companies, gave a total of $44 million to defeat the proposition. Their parent company, Unilever, donated almost $500 million to take down the measure, Underground Health reported.
