Donaldsville Explosion: Worker Remains Hospitalized, Another Killed
One worker remained hospitalized on Saturday following an explosion at a nitrogen production plant in Donaldsville, Louisiana on Friday, that killed one worker and injured seven.
CF Industries said one company employee is in a local hospital and in stable condition. Other injured workers, including CF Industries employees and employees of the company's contractors, were released after being treated, according to the company.The accident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on Friday in a part of the plant that was shut down for maintenance activity. A piece of equipment called a nitrogen distribution header ruptured during the unloading of nitrogen from a truck.
CF Industries said the accident produced no fire and no chemicals were released as a result of the incident.
Ronald "Rocky" Morris Jr., a 56-year-old man who had worked at the company for 34 years, was killed in the accident on Friday.
"Our priority right now is the health and safety of our employees," Donaldsonville plant manager Lou Frey said in a company news release.
State Police Trooper Jared Sandifer said Saturday that officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were coming to the CF Industries facility as soon as the site was deemed safe.
Sandifer said the state police's hazardous materials unit was at the plant overnight.
Donaldsville is a small city on the Mississippi River about 60 miles northwest of New Orleans.
The explosion came a day after a blast occurred at a Williams Olefins petrochemical plant about 10 miles to the north in Geismar that killed two people and injured more than 100.
