James Gandolfini News: Autopsy Confirms Heart Attack Cause of Death
James Gandolfini's autopsy results announced on Friday confirmed that he died after suffering a heart attack.
CBS News reported that a family friend of Gandolfini's, Michael Kobold, told reporters at a press conference that the late Sopranos actor died of a heart attack and that he was healthy without heart problems before he went into cardiac arrest on Wednesday. He also confirmed there was no substance abuse found in his system or foul play of any kind surrounding his death.
"There's nothing out of the ordinary. It was a heart attack. It was a natural cause," Kobold reportedly said. "There was no foul play, no substance abuse. None of that."
Following the autopsy examination on Friday morning (Italy time), Gandolfini's body was released to a funeral director in Rome, Kobold shared with reporters.
The report added that Kobold delivered the news of the autopsy results in a press conference because the U.S. Embassy told the morgue department at Rome's Policlinico Umberto I hospital not to speak to reporters. Kobold also shared that Gandolfini's family is working with the Italian government to have the actor's body returned to the United Stated as soon as possible and if all goes well, it will arrive by mid-week next week.
Gandolfini was found unconscious by his son at the Boscolo Exedra Roma hotel at 10 p.m. (Italy time) on Wednesday, June 19. A rep for the hotel told TODAY that Gandolfini's son Michael, 13, called the front desk for help after he found his father lying on the bathroom floor alive but not moving. Paramdedics arrived and tried to resuscitate Gandolfini repeatedly as he was driven to the Policlinico Umberto I Hospital.
laudio Modini, the director of the Emergency Department of Policlinico, told ABC News that Gandolfini arrived in cardiac arrest at 10:20 p.m. Resuscitation efforts continued for 40 minutes until he died. His official time of death was 11 p.m., said Modini.
TMZ reported that Michael's mother, Gandolfini's first wife Marcy Wudarksi, flew to Italy immediately when she heard the news.
Gandolfini's autopsy was held off until Friday because of the Italian law that an autopsy cannot occur until 24 hours after someone dies, according to Yahoo!. Additionally, Italian authorities will not allow Gandolfini's body to be transported back to the United States until a death certificate is issued as to the cause of death and is confirmed following the autopsy.
Gandolfini was married to his second wife, Deborah Lin Gandolfini, until his death. She gave birth to his second child, a daughter TK, last fall.
