Kyrie Irving's 'Uncle Drew' Now Has An Official Movie Trailer
Uncle Drew's trailer is finally out, featuring several of the NBA legends, including Kyrie Irving, portraying themselves as old men playing basketball.
Fans are definitely seeing a different side of Irving, a rather funny one, as he stars in the feature-length comedy Uncle Drew. Other cast include celebrity basketball players Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, and Nate Robinson.
Oldies In The Harlem
In the movie, Uncle Drew gathers up his senior pals to play in the 50th-anniversary tournament at Harlem's Rucker Park. Dax, played by Lil Rel Howery, spent all his life's savings for the tournament only to lose to his rival team, The League.
Dax started recruiting the oldies in the Harlem, and he even traveled across the country to reunite Uncle Drew's old squad.
Lisa Leslie also joins the crew, though it is not certain whether Celtics' Bill Russell or Cavaliers' Kevin Love will make appearances. The two had cameos on the second episode of Pepsi's web commercials.
Other scenes present a supposed non-traditional approach to comedy, understandably so as Uncle Drew is derived from a Pepsi commercial. The film tries to mimic an Adam Sandler style while still being friendly to kids under age 13 and hilarious enough for adults.
The script is written by Jay Longino, who also wrote Skiptrace (2016) starring Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville, and Bachelor Party 2: The Last Temptation (2008).
Uncle Drew is due for theaters on June 29 right after the NBA Finals.
Ballers Turned Comedians
The two-minute teaser showcased Irving's natural prowess for comedy. His tandem with Howery, Tiffany Haddish, and Nick Kroll is able to project a good old comedy in the big screen.
O'Neal's personification like "Wolverine's grandfather" and Webber's false facial hair garnered solid laughs from the crowd. Moviegoers will be surprised with Webber trying to baptize babies by putting them behind his back and making a dunk.
Nike's Flavor Of The Month
It has been reported that while LeBron James is arguably the most popular player in the NBA, it is not enough for Nike to make him the brand ambassador.
"The focus now is on Kyrie [Irving]. He's the focal point on an East Coast team, and it makes sense for [Nike] to focus on Kyrie in the short term and bring that [sneaker] line up," industry expert Ankur Amin said.
The Nike Kyrie 4 is named after the Celtics' star and is priced at $120.
