Sex And The City Star Cynthia Nixon May Run For New York Governor
The idea of fans regarding the character of Sex and the City's Miranda is about to change drastically. Cynthia Nixon has set her eyes on becoming New York's next governor.
Switching Lanes
The actress and activist, still most well-known for playing the super cynical lawyer on the hit series Sex and the City, is looking to change careers and enter the world of politics.
Reportedly, Nixon has been holding meetings with two prominent Democratic political operatives. It is believed that she will challenge Andrew Cuomo, incumbent New York governor, in the upcoming gubernatorial election later this year.
Nixon has been openly and vocally critical of Cuomo and his policies over the past few years. Now, she is seeking to launch a primary challenge against the incumbent Democrat.
Her main policy concerns education, which she has been campaigning for many years and also transportation. Ongoing issues with the New York subway system are viewed as some of Cuomo's greatest political weaknesses.
Rebecca Katz and Bill Hyers, veteran political consultants, and former advisors to Bill de Blasio have reportedly been advising Nixon. The New York City mayor has been at odds with Cuomo on several occasions.
"Many concerned New Yorkers have been encouraging Cynthia to run for office, and as she has said previously, she will continue to explore it. If and when such a decision is made, Cynthia will be sure to make her plans public," Nixon's publicist said in a statement.
A Good Fit
The 51-year-old actress is a vocal proponent of the rights of women and people of color. She also campaigns for more political action from minority groups in general.
She has urged her social media followers to take charge of their own political destiny, particularly in the wake of President Trump's election.
Nixon's victory would make her the first lesbian governor of New York. However, she's not the only TV alum looking to make her voice heard.
Law & Order: SVU star Diane Neal recently announced her own bid for Congress. She even shared her very first campaign slogan and poster on Twitter.
As to whether or not Cuomo is worried about the possible threat from Nixon, he brushed off such concerns, referring to the nature of the political game. He was first elected in 2010 and is running for a third term. Cuomo retains a strong loyalty to the Democrats but there is a section of liberal activists fighting against him simultaneously.
Although he claims he is not worried about Nixon's interest in the position, Cuomo would be going up against a significant media push for the actress. Nixon has amassed a huge amount of Twitter followers over a short period of time. She is well-known and much liked for being both a vocal activist and a beloved screen presence.
