Ater the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 vote that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional on Wednesday, actress Kristen Bell and singer Melissa Etheridge announced they would marry their respective partners.

The Defense of Marriage Act, a law that was passed in 1996 by then President Bill Clinton and also known as DOMA, denied same-sex partners the same marriage benefits heterosexual couples enjoy.

Huffington Post reported that the Supreme Court also ruled to defend the termination of Proposition 8, California's ban on same sex marriage.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the following, regarding not upholding "Prop 8": "We have never before upheld the standing of a private party to defend the constitutionality of a state statute when state officials have chosen not to. We decline to do so for the first time here."

Huffington Post also reported what Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote on behalf of the majority opnion regarding the ruling on DOMA.

"The federal statute is invalid, for no legitimate purpose overcomes the purpose and effect to disparage and to injure those whom the State, by its marriage laws, sought to protect in personhood and dignity," Kennedy wrote. "By seeking to displace this protection and treating those persons as living in marriages less respected than others, the federal statute is in violation of the Fifth Amendment."

After Showtime's House of Lies actress Kristen Bell learned the news, she proposed to her boyfriend and father of her child, actor Dax Shepherd, on Twitter.

"will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove," Bell wrote on Twitter.

"F--k Yes!!!!!!!!!!!" Shepard replied on Twitter. "DOMA is dead. Prop 8 is dead. Now let's bring my big, gay marriage to @IMKristenBell to Life!!!!"

The couple had announced in February that they refused to wed until gay marriage is legal.

Reuters reported that Melissa Etheridge announced that she will now wed her longterm partner, Nurse Jackie creator Linda Wallem.

"I look forward to exercising my American civil liberties and getting fully, completely and legally married this year to my true love of over three years, Linda Wallem," Etheridge said in a statement. "Once again our constitution stands strong," said the Come To My Window singer.

"All men, and women, and everything in between are created equal," she added.
