Did A 'Ready Player One' TV Commercial Reveal The Movie's 'Firefly' Cameo?
The title ship of Firefly made its cameo in Ready Player One and fans of the 2002 hit TV series could not be more elated. The ship made its appearance in a new TV spot for the sci-fi film.
'Firefly' Easter Egg
Majority of the pop culture references in Ready Player One are from the 1980s. However, there are also Easter Eggs from Steven Spielberg's past films, including Jurassic Park's T-Rex and the Iron Giant. The film also paid tribute to the 2000s with the appearance of the Spartans from Halo and Captain Malcolm Reynolds' ship in Firefly.
One eagle-eyed fan was quick to point out the iconic spacecraft among the ships heading toward the zero-gravity nightclub called The Distracted Globe. The ship swooping into the shot is unmistakable as the Firefly spacecraft because of its engine placement and silhouette.
Aside from the descent to The Distracted Globe, the Firefly ship also makes a second appearance in the final battle sequence in Ready Player One. This action sequence reportedly features several other cameos and Easter Eggs that viewers would want to fix their eyes on so they can pick apart as many references as possible.
Aside from the Firefly class sweeping by the Vonnegut, the TV spot for Ready Player One also has several references to other iconic spacecraft. The Colonial Viper flying over the Vonnegut's right engine is a nod to Battlestar Galactica. A couple of Star Wars Easter Eggs also appeared in the TV spot, with the appearance of the Lambda-class Imperial shuttle and the X-Wing flying underneath the Vonnegut.
'Firefly' Reboot
The Firefly cameo in Ready Player One only fuelled fans' anticipation to see a reboot of the series from director and creator Joss Whedon. Nathan Fillion, who played Capt. Malcolm Reynolds, teased at a possible remake when he reunited with his co-stars some months ago.
Fillion shared an Instagram photo of him hanging out with Alan Tudyk and Morena Baccarin, who in the series played Hoban Washburne and Inara Serra, respectively. Apparently, The Castle star is very much aware of the hype surrounding the Firefly reboot that he teased fans about it with the photo's caption.
"What do you want to believe we talked about?" Fillion captioned the image he posted in June 2017. Naturally, fans mostly answered Firefly.
"A firefly reboot please for all that is good in life!!!!!!!" one user wrote, while another commented, "To bring back the show ! My All time favorite."
As it stands, a Firefly reboot may still not be in the cards for the actors, who have gone on to make other successful films and shows. For now, fans can take comfort in knowing that they can see the titular ship in action again when Ready Player One hits theaters on March 29.
