Parkland Shooter To Donate $800K Inheritance To Victims, Lawyers Say
The man who allegedly killed 17 students and teachers in Parkland wants to give back. Reports say he wants to donate his inheritance to victims.
Alleged Parkland Shooter To Donate Inheritance
A lawyer spoke on Nicholas Cruz’s behalf and revealed that Cruz, who opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, wants those impacted to receive his inheritance and any other money he receives.
“Mr. Cruz does not want those funds, whatever money that he is entitled to,” said the head of his legal team, Melissa McNeill, in front of a Broward County judge Wednesday, April 11. “He would like that money donated to an organization that the victims’ family believes would be able to facilitate healing in our community or an opportunity to educate our community about the issues that have ripened over the last four or five months.”
As for how much money Cruz will get in his inheritance, it’s just shy of $1 million as he’s slated to receive $800,000 from a trust fund following his biological mother’s passing last November. Another lawyer for Cruz, Howard Finkelstein, said the money will go to those who have been “hurt” by Cruz’s actions.
Still, it isn’t certain how the payout will happen. There’s a question of whether it will be a lump sum or monthly or yearly payments. There’s also uncertainty of how much Cruz will truly get.
Finkelstein said if the inheritance is paid monthly, Cruz could have “a million dollars” to use at his discretion.
The Fight For Gun Reform Continues
One of the “issues” that McNeill was likely referring to is gun reform. Since the shooting shook the nation earlier this year, students around the country have been taking steps to push for gun reform, especially when it comes to automatic weapons like the one Cruz allegedly used in the tragic shooting.
Thousands gathered to march on Washington last month in the March For Our Lives protest. They called out lawmakers and reminded them that before long, they will be old enough to vote if they aren’t already, and they’ll be sure to vote for a legislation that supports their views on gun reform. Celebrities have also stood with the students in the fight for gun reform.
The National Rifle Association has also been under attack since the shooting. Major airlines such as Delta Airlines and United Airlines have pulled their advertisements for the NRA since the shooting. Car rental companies Hertz and Enterprise, as well as Allied Van Lines, MetLife, Symantec, and Best Western, are just a handful of other companies who took similar actions.
