Meghan Markle Makes History As First Royal Nominated For Teen Choice Award
Meghan Markle continues to prove she's no ordinary royal. The new Duchess of Sussex received a nomination for a Teen Choice Award.
Making History
The Suits alum is the first member of the royal family to be nominated for such an award. It was announced last Friday that she was in the running for Choice Style Icon.
If enough tech-savvy teens vote for her, the Duchess might even attend the awards ceremony to accept her award — a surfboard — in person. If she can't make it, she can grace her loyal subjects with a video clip.
Voting is now open, and eager fans can look out for Markle on the ballot alongside the likes of Gossip Girl star Blake Lively, One Direction alum Harry Styles, rappers Migos, actress Zendaya, and Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman.
Markle has been a fashion icon for a while now, but she has ascended to full-on royalty since she tied the knot with Prince Harry on May 19. The two got hitched at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in front of family, friends, and millions of fans watching live at home across the globe.
The bride's custom Givenchy wedding gown received much criticism, and many celebrities, including pop star Katy Perry, commented that it wasn't fit for the occasion.
Coming Into Her Own
The Duchess hasn't always been a style maven, admitting in an interview last year that she used to take it much easier.
"My sensibility had always been relaxed California girl style, and on any given day I was in jeans, cut-offs, and flip-flops," she admitted.
However, her role on Suits changed the game as, aside from appearing on various red carpet events for the show, Markle had access to a whole new wardrobe.
"The fashion on Suits is gorgeous, so it also became my education of designers and really knowing what fits my body well," she explained.
Markle has been under the microscope since marrying Prince Harry, however, with a story earlier this week revealing she wears high heels that are a size too big for her to stay comfortable all day.
If she does win the Teen Choice Award, the proud activist could utilize the platform to engage with the younger generation and to spread awareness about causes close to her heart, such as gender equality.
Although this is her first nomination since becoming a royal, Markle has also been submitted for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category by USA Network for her role on Suits. The nominations for that award will be announced on July 12.
