Aaron Hernandez Jail: Ex-New England Patriots Star Denied Request For Higher Protein Diet [VIDEO]
Aaron Hernandez is adapting to life in prison despite a diet that lacks the amount of protein the former pro athlete would like, The Boston Globe reported Tuesday.
The newspaper was given a tour of the Bristol County House of Correction where the former NFL tight end is currently awaiting trial for the murder of Odin Lloyd. The publication wasn't given access to the "special management unit," where Hernandez is kept away from the prison's general population, but was able to get a sense of what life is like for the 23-year-old by talking to inmates, correction officers and Bristol County Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson, who conducted the tour.

Hodgson said Hernandez had been a model inmate and has made as smooth a transition as can be expected to his confined quarters. The ex-New England Patriot is still discovering how stark prison life can be, however. On one occasion, Hernandez allegedly asked for more protein in his diet but was denied.
His breakfast consists of one egg, a portion of grits, a small muffin square and a choice between milk or juice. A typical lunch includes a cheese burrito, served with two slices of bread and rice. A routine supper includes, a beef burger with rice and beans, green beans, fruit, fortified juice and water.
Like his diet, his prison cell only provides the bare necessities: a metal double bunk bed with an inch-thick mattress, a pillow, a sheet, and blanket. There's a metal toilet-sink combination and a tiny metal desk with an attached metal stool inside.
"Every Sunday he went into a stadium where thousands of people cheered him and revered him,'' said Hodgson. "In an instant he walks through our door, gets a new uniform, a longer number, and nobody's cheering for him."
