Dwyane Wade Ex-Wife Siohvaughn Funches Receives $5 Million Divorce Settlement [VIDEO]
Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade agreed to pay his ex-wife $5 million dollars as part of their divorce settlement after a six-year battle, his attorney announced on Monday.
Siohvaughn Funches, Wade's ex-wife and the mother of his two sons, made headlines when she protested outside a Chicago courthouse on July 19. Funches held a sign that read "NBA Miami Heat star mother of his children on the streets," during her demonstration. She claimed she was forced to desperation after losing a series of court battles to acquire a portion of her husband's endorsement earnings.
"Ms. Funches has made a mockery of homelessness which is a serious and personal issue for Mr. Wade as his mother was homeless for a period of time when he was a child," Wade's attorney, James B. Pritikin, said in a statement.
Wade initially filed for divorce from Funches in 2007 and won a separate lengthy court battle in 2011, in which he was awarded full custody of his two sons Zaire and Zion. According to Pritikin, his client has been his supporting Funches with a monthly payment of $25,000, which pays for her mortgage, fours cars, insurance, taxes and attorney fees.
Funches filed a lawsuit earlier in July against Wade - who signed a six-year contract with the Heat in 2010 worth $107 million - for failure to pay income from endorsement contracts as part of a 2008 agreement. Court papers filed last week, however, indicate the lawsuit was dropped.
"I don't want anything, no money, all I want is my freedom and my voice," Funches-Wade said.
In 2012, Funches was arrested on misdemeanor charges of attempted child abduction, unlawful visitation interference and obstruction of a peace officer after an incident related to visitation. With the exclusion of the obstruction of a peace officer, all the charges were dismissed, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Wade's attorney said a court will have to decide whether Funches will be able to visit her sons in the future.
"The safety and well-being of his children are (Wade's) main priority," Pritikin said. "Due to Ms. Funches' current unstable mental state, her visitation will be determined by the court. Mr. Wade continues to hope that one day he will have a civil relationship with his ex-wife for the sake of their sons."
