The next NBA season will be a defining one for the Knicks in their fight to remain New York's premiere team, as reports show the Nets' Barclays stadium is already more popular than Madison Square Garden.

Trade magazine Pollstar reported that the Barclays Center is ranked third in the world for ticket sales behind England's O2 Arena and Manchester Arena, according to NY1. The Knicks' Madison Square Garden, on the other hand, was ranked ninth in the nation for ticket sales and 29th worldwide. Billboard Magazine also lists Barclays second in the world for gross ticket sales revenue, with nearly $47 million. While the Knicks have a more storied franchise than the Nets---with two NBA championships to Brooklyn's nil-Brooklyn as a whole, along with their pro basketball franchise, has significant momentum in regards to popularity, as evidenced by the Pollstar report.

To make matter worse for the Knicks, it was announced today that the New York City Council notified the arena that it has 10 years to vacate its 45-year-old premises and find a new home.

The last domino in the Knicks' favor, which has yet to fall, in their battle for supremacy of New York is their recent success over the Nets. Since the Nets moved to Barclays in 2012, the Knicks have had a better record--54 wins to the Brooklyn's 49--and went further in the playoffs last season. But the Nets have retooled their roster, adding veteran stars Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett from the Celtics to an already talented roster.

If Brooklyn has a more successful 2013-2014 NBA season than the New York, coupled with the popularity of the Barclays venue and the looming departure of the Garden from the historic 33rd Street location, the Nets could be the new kings of The Big Apple.
