Police are searching a lake in Aaron Hernandez's hometown of Bristol, Conn. for the firearm that was used to murder his alleged victim Odin Lloyd, according to Channel 3 Eyewitness News.

Massachusetts police returned to Connecticut for the second week in a row, after executing several search warrants in Bristol homes associated with Hernandez and his acquaintances Ernest Wallace and Carlos Ortiz, whom investigators say were with Hernandez when Lloyd was killed.

Police crews arrived at Pine Lake on Monday to search for a possible weapon used in Lloyd's death, after they received a tip that the .45 caliber Glock may have been tossed into the water, according to the report.

The gun is the most coveted piece of evidence in the case and prosecutors believe they will have a definite edge on Hernandez's defense if the weapon is found. Though the proof collected in the case against Hernandez is strong, and the 23-year-old has been denied bail twice because of it, it's mostly circumstantial.

Hernandez has been charged with orchestrating Lloyd's murder, while his two co-defendants, Wallace and Ortiz, face lesser charges related to the case.

Officials said police would likely be at the lake all day, and could possibly search its waters again on Tuesday if nothing is found.

On July 24 The Boston Globe reported that prosecutors are trying to convince a Suffolk County grand jury that Aaron Hernandez should be charged in a separate case involving the shooting death of two men in Boston in July 2012.

The presentation of the case to a grand jury hints that the investigation of the double homicide is now focused on Hernandez. The victims, Safiro Furtado and Daniel Abreu, were immigrants from Cape Verde. They were killed on July 16, 2012 when someone driving an SUV with Rohde Island license plates drove by their car and opened fire.
