Netflix's 'Sweet Magnolias' Season 3 Happening? Author Sheryl Woods Hopes One Character Will Not Become a 'Villain'
"Sweet Magnolias" Season 2 dropped just back on February 5, but people are already clamoring for Season 3.
"Stealing Home," the first Sweet Magnolias novel, was written by author Sherryl Woods in 2007. Since then, the Sweet Magnolias series has expanded to include eleven books and a cookbook featuring the Southern cooking of Dana Sue Sullivan, the protagonist of the Sweet Magnolias series.
Given there's a total of eleven books, it's not that impossible for it to have a Season 3 on Netflix.
Making a television adaptation of a book or books may be a stressful process for everyone involved, but this is especially true for the fans. These characters have captured their hearts, and as a result, they are enamored with and would hate to see some of their favorites adapted differently for television. What will happen if a character is to make a major shift from how he or she is described in the book?
Distractify was granted access to an exclusive interview with Sherryl, who revealed whether a Season 3 is possible and if does push through, what can be expected. The author revealed that with how things are going, if Season 3 is to happen, one character might not stay faithful to how he was written in the books.
From my perspective, [the show is] following the books fairly well," Sherryl revealed to us. Part of the reason it was so important for the show to parallel the books is that Sherryl didn't want to disappoint her fans. She told Distractify that when changes are made, "readers go crazy." However, she framed the differences in a very interesting way.
Sherryl has a special soft spot for Justin Bruening's character, Cal Maddox, on the program. Late in Season 2, Cal (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) confides in Maddie about his own struggles with rage. After an argument with an obsessive fan at Dana Sue's restaurant, Cal is hauled away by the police in the Season 2 finale. The author says she's a little bit worried about what will happen to Cal, because he was not supposed to be such an angry person. In the book, he was not.
"I'm a little concerned about Cal," Sherryl revealed. "The anger management issue was not an issue in the books, and I think it does add this other layer to him but I certainly don't want to see him turn into a villain of some kind."
As said, Netflix isn't making any promises at the moment for "Sweet Magnolias" Season 3. If there is, there's no telling how much longer fans have to wait as well. But the likelihood is actually high so there's no need to fret.
