Royal Shock: Prince George Might Never Be King, Constitutional Expert Explains Why
Prince George may not be king in the future, and a royal close to him could take over the throne instead.
Since the day he was born, Prince George automatically scored a higher rank in the line of succession because of his father's position in the monarchy. But despite his birthright, he might decide to avoid the throne before Prince William abdicates or dies.
A constitutional expert at Bangor University, Dr. Craig Prescott, told Express UK that Prince George could decide not to be a monarch.
"The line of succession to the crown is set out by Act of Parliament and can only be changed by another Act of Parliament. So Prince George would have to make that decision before his father Prince William dies, and then Parliament could pass legislation making the next in line, Princess Charlotte, Queen (assuming she would want to do it)," he explained.
Dr. Presscott compared the potential future to what happened to Edward VIII when he abdicated. At that time, he chose to leave his position and marry Wallis Simpson. The Declaration of Abdication Act 1936 then removed him as king and made Queen Elizabeth II's father take over.
Prince George Already Preparing to Be King?
Although he has the free will to decide on his future, many royal fans noted that Prince William and Kate's wife already began preparing him at a very young age.
In Robert Lacey's book, "Battle of Brothers," the royal historian said he already learned about his inherited role when he was seven.
"Sometime around the boy's seventh birthday in the summer of 2020, it is thought that his parents went into more detail about what the little prince's life of future royal 'service and duty' would particularly involve," he explained.
Meanwhile, Prince William and Kate had their children help them deliver meals to their at-risk neighbors at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The family also joined the "clap for carers," and Prince George himself already committed to picking up litter in his school.
The Duke of Cambridge told BBC that his son was annoyed that they went out litter picking and doing the same thing over and over again. Prince George has also been training in public speaking that he would usually appear in videos shared by Kensington Palace.
With the preparations he has been doing, only time can tell whether he would follow his grandfather and father's footsteps.
