Sarah Michelle Gellar 'Celebrates' 25th Anniversary of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Despite Abuse Controversy
To mark the 25th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, actress Sarah Michelle Gellar posted some nostalgic photos from the show's heyday.
The 44-year-old actress was filled with fond memories of the venerable show, which made its debut on this day in 1997, and she acknowledged that it was the show's loyal audience that had kept the memory of the stellar show alive.
While Gellar, who has since acted in several film and television roles, said that keeping Buffy alive was a "uphill fight," today was a time to celebrate the supernatural adolescent drama, which initially aired on The WB and ended in 2003.
"25 years ago today I had the honor to introduce the world to my version of Buffy Anne Summers. It was an uphill battle," she wrote. "A mid season replacement, on a new network based on a movie, that was by no means a giant success." she added.
She then said the success was due to the fans, who were unbelievably loyal. She added that this is also why the show's 25th anniversary is still worth celebrating today.
Joss Whedon's Mutant Enemy production firm developed the television series, which premiered nearly five years after the release of the film of the same name.
With the hashtag #WWBD, she posed the question to her tens of millions of Instagram followers: "What would Buffy do?"
It can be remembered however that the memories of the show have been mired with a controversy, just in 2021.
One of the show's cast members Charisma Carpenter criticized the show's creator Joss Whedon and called him "toxic" and "cruel." Her co-stars banded arounded her.
When Charisma, who played Cordelia Chase on Buffy for three seasons, became pregnant in 2003, Joss allegedly labeled her fat and dismissed her from the spin-off, "Angel."
"For nearly two decades I have held my tongue and even made excuses for certain events that traumatize me to this day," Carpenter wrote. "Joss Whedon abused his power on numerous occasions while working together on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel." she added.
This revelation was not made of the blue. She was triggered when Ray Fisher, accused Whedon in 2017 of being abusive on the set of "Justice League."
