Christian Eriksen Makes Commendable Return to Field After Suffering Cardiac Arrest
Christian Eriksen made a commendable comeback to the soccer field months after "dying" during a game.
Over a year after suffering a medical emergency in the middle of a game, Eriksen ultimately returned by having his first goal on Saturday.
Eriksen scored the goal during the friendly game between Denmark and the Netherlands. After having a commendable performance, he expressed his happiness and gratitude in an interview with Reuters.
According to the 30-year-old athlete, he was happy that the ball came straight to him to allow him to start his comeback in a perfect way.
"I felt very welcome (by the Netherlands fans). I've been here before (for Ajax) for many years so of course, they know me, but it was a very heartwarming reception for sure," he added. "I'm looking forward to playing at the Qatar World Cup but there are a lot of games in between and I'm focused on them," he went on.
ESPN FC uploaded a now-viral video of Eriksen's goal, showing how the crowd began cheering on her during the historic moment after almost dying on the field.
Eriksen almost had a second goal during the game, but the ball hit the goalpost instead. His team lost the friendly match with a 4-2 score.
What Happened to Christian Eriksen?
Eriksen shocked the soccer industry when he faced an emergency health issue during the Euro 2020 opener against Finland.
At that time, the Danish soccer player suddenly collapsed on the field and suffered an emergency issue that required resuscitation. He was rushed to Rigshospitalet following the cardiac arrest.
The Danish Football Association released a statement after the incident and assured fans that Eriksen was already doing well. However, the emergency medical team's Morten Boesen noted that the athlete almost lost his life before the CPR treatment.
He recalled how they would never know how close they were to losing Eriksen before they conducted one shot of defibrillator.
"Well, what should I say? He was gone. And we did cardiac resuscitation, and it was cardiac arrest," he said, as quoted by CNN. "The details...I am not a cardiologist, so the details about what happened and further I will leave to the experts."
Inter Milan team doctor Piero Volpi told Gazzetta Dello Sport that Eriksen did not show any symptoms of the arrest. He added that Eriksen never hinted at the health problem despite the rigorous preparations and examinations.
Thus, what led to his arrest remains unknown.
