Jim Carrey Reacts to Will Smith Slap, Says He’s ‘Sickened’ by Those Who Applauded
Jim Carrey is candidly sharing his true feelings about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars, and it seems like he's not happy.
Speaking to Gayle King for CBS Mornings to promote his latest movie, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," the comedian weighed in on what happened during the coveted awards show, saying he was "sickened" by the standing ovation.
The actor referred to the audience's reaction during Smith's award acceptance after winning the Best Actor in a Leading Role category for his movie "King Richard."
"I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like, oh, this is a really clear indication that we're not the cool club anymore," he added.
Before accepting the trophy, the "Men In Black" actor slapped Rock in front of the audience after making a "G.I. Jane" joke, referencing Jada Pinkett Smith's hairstyle.
The "Red Table Talk" actress has been vocal about her alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss.
When Smith returned to his seat, he shouted, "keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth!"
Gayle King then told Carrey that if anyone else had done what Smith did, they could have been arrested or escorted out by security.
The actor said, "he should have been."
Putting himself in Rock's situation, Carrey said he would sue the actor for $200 million because the infamous video would be around forever.
"It's going to be ubiquitous. You know, that insult is gonna last a very long time," he added. (via E! News)
The "Bruce Almighty" actor said it's more acceptable if Smith only shouted from his seat or tweeted about his disapproval of the joke because a person doesn't have the right to go up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they "said words."
For his message to Will Smith, Carrey said he wishes him the best, and he doesn't have anything against the "After Earth" actor.
Although he admits that the actor has done great things, he doesn't believe that the infamous Oscars slap was a good moment.
Speaking further about what happened, Carrey felt the incident took the attention away from the winners that evening, saying it "casts a pall over everybody's shining moment," and it was selfish on Smith's part to take away the spotlight from other celebrities.
