Leah McSweeney Details Near-Death Experience After Drug, Alcohol Addiction
Leah McSweeney recently revealed a shocking thing that happened to her when she was 18 years old, saying she "could have died" if her parents didn't take action against her addiction.
According to Page Six, the "Real Housewives of New York City" star's parents had kicked her out of their home in Connecticut almost 20 years ago.
Her parents told her that she needed to live in a therapeutic community supervised by nuns after she finished her third time at rehab for drugs and alcohol.
The 39-year-old reality star told the outlet that she held her parents' actions against them throughout the years, but she finally realized their intentions when she got sober for the first time.
"When I finally got sober in 2009 and was in a 12-Step program and did all that work, I realized how if they hadn't done that, I could have died," the TV star said.
The "RHONY" cast member added that she wouldn't have the life she has now if it didn't happen, and she's grateful for that.
McSweeney just released a new book titled "Chaos Theory" where she details her life growing up in the busy New York City and the quiet suburbs of Newtown, Connecticut.
In eighth grade, the reality star said she got expelled from an all-girls Catholic school. This led her family to move into the suburbs, and it was a different experience for her.
Shortly after settling in the new area, McSweeney said she began heavily drinking and doing any drug substances anyone would give her.
At the age of 14, she's already taking crystal meth that made her a "g****** superwoman."
In addition to the substance mentioned above, she experimented with several other drugs like cocaine, Special K, speed, acid, and Vicodin
After ten years of being sober, McSweeney unfortunately relapsed and started drinking a few months before the 12th season of "RHONY."
"I didn't drink for 10 years, then decide to start drinking again, which was obviously shocking to my family and my friends, and then end up on a TV show during this time," she said.
The TV star added that she was trying to hide that the experience was a big deal and it was "huge."
Today, McSweeney is two years sober from alcohol. She celebrated the milestone on March 31.
