Aaliyah Gayles Health Update: USC Basketball Commit Shot At House Party [REPORT]
USC women's basketball commit Aaliyah Gayles suffered from multiple gunshots at a house party in North Las Vegas, multiple news outlets confirmed.
The school released a statement to ESPN, revealing that Gayles was one of the four people - two adults and two minors -- who was shot after a fight broke inside a residence.
The North Las Vegas Police Department told PEOPLE that Gayles and the other three victims sustained survivable gunshot wounds before they were transported to a local hospital. One of the adult victims, however, is reportedly in serious condition after suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to her lower body.
The three others are fortunately in stable condition already. Gayles also underwent two emergency surgeries on Sunday morning.
USC women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb sent a statement to PEOPLE, saying, "Aaliyah is one of the strongest, most resilient young people I have ever known. I have no doubt she will continue to face this unfathomable situation with courage and resolve. We will continue to support her and her parents in every way that we possibly can."
Aaliyah Gayles' Father Extends Gratitude For People's Care, Support
Following the incident, her father, Dwight, shared a heartfelt update on Twitter to thank everyone who support his daughter.
"I know there is some that will say it's my fault and I take full responsibility for it, but please please keep my baby girl in your prayers, Las Vegas. I will give everyone that supports Aaliyah an update but she's ok she go make it like always thank you all, true warrior," he wrote.
He also shared a follow-up tweet, saying that he simply wanted his daughter to return home.
Dwight has not dropped a new update about Gayles, but his friends and loved ones are also hoping she will be discharged from the hospital soon.
Las Vegas Review-Journal said that the 18-year-old is currently a point guard at Spring Valley High School and is committed to the University of Southern California. She was initially committed to the Trojans but decommitted soon after the former head coach, Mark Trakh, announced his retirement. She still ended up recommitting to USC after the new head coach, Lindsay Gottlieb, joined the team.
As of press time, Gayles is one of the top recruits in the country. Before the incident, she was still able to play in the McDonald's All-American and Jordan Brand Classic Game.
