‘RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 7’ Queens Reveal Their Surprising Drag Name Origins
Over the past years and seasons of "RuPaul's Drag Race," many fans have been fascinated with the contestants' drag names. Although it may sound random at times, some queens put a lot of effort into creating their personas.
Appearing on "The Kelly Clarkson Show," four of the previously crowned winners that will compete on this season of All-Stars, Raja Gemini, Shea Couleé, Yvie Oddly, and Monét X Change, reveals the surprising origins of their drag names.
New York City-based performer, Monét, said she was eating sticky wings at the Dallas barbecue in Time Square when she made a big move by choosing her screen name.
Across the street, she spotted a currency exchange, but it was "too boring" for her liking, so she thought of "money" and put an accent on the letter "e," and the rest was history.
The "Sibling Rivalry" co-host then cracked a joke, saying, "every good drag name starts with chicken wings."
Crowned winner of season 11, Yvie, joked about her drag name origin, saying she threw letters in a bag and then pulled them out.
She later revealed that she was labeled "odd" throughout her life and decided to make a brand out of it. Her drag name was also derived from "even and odd."
For All-Stars 5 winner Shea Couleé, her real middle name is "Shea," which means "beautiful boy" in Swahili. Her last name was derived from an African riddle that goes, "shea shea coulee, shea confissa, confissa lala, allah kilala."
Lastly, for season 3's Raja got her name because she's Indonesian, and in the country, "Raja" means king.
Also, at the time, the Disney film "Aladdin" had just come out, and there was a tiger named Raja, and she was born in the year of the tiger.
Four other queens were missing from the guesting: Jaida Essence Hall, The Vivienne, Jinkx Monsoon, and Trinity The Tuck.
The latest interview comes a few days after the queens of All-Stars 7 revealed which contestant has the best looks throughout the upcoming season.
Trinity answered Yvie Oddly. Shea agreed and mentioned that her runway looks "legitimately blew my mind."
Raja was also praised for her creativity as her "art is timeless."
"Not only was she fierce competition, but also compassionate and understanding," Shea said.
