[BREAKING] Dave Chappelle Breaks Silence After Near-Death Attack at Hollywood Bowl
Dave Chappelle finally commented on the attack that almost harmed him while onstage at the Hollywood Bowl.
In a new press statement released by Chappelle's spokesperson via Deadline, the comedian reportedly did not want the incident to overshadow his shows. He managed to perform for days as part of the Netflix Is a Joke Festival before the attack happened.
"Dave Chappelle celebrated four nights of comedy and music, setting record-breaking sales for a comedian at the Hollywood Bowl. This run ties Chappelle with Monty Python for the most headlined shows by any comedian at the Hollywood Bowl, reaching 70k fans of diverse backgrounds during the first Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival," the spokesperson said.
With that, Chappelle asked everyone not to forget the "magic" of the historic moment in his career.
The representative continued the statement by calling it an unfortunate and unsettling event. Fortunately, Jamie Foxx and Chris Rock calmed the crowd.
Foxx also helped to suppress the suspect.
Aside from Chappelle, a Netflix spokesperson also addressed the incident, expressing how much they care about the safety of the festival's performers. It also stood to defend the right of stand-up comedians to perform without fear of violence.
What Happened to Dave Chappelle?
Multiple news outlets continuously shared details about the Tuesday attack.
It has since been revealed that the 48-year-old was knocked to the ground by a man in a black hoodie. It occurred toward the end of his set, a few moments after making jokes about Will Smith.
Chappelle's piece highlighted Smith's infamous slap at the 2022 Oscars after Rock made a joke regarding Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head.
The attacker still attempted to flee the scene, but security guards and the comedian's team worked together to pin down the culprit.
Meanwhile, a PEOPLE staff said, "The people on the right hand side of the stage were stomping on the man - I witnessed him getting pretty badly beat up. I'm pretty sure Dave stomped on him too. Dave said, 'He's back there getting stomped. Where did that n----- come from? It was a trans man.'"
Chappelle once came under fire when he made jokes in his Netflix special, "The Closer," that targeted the LGBTQ community. At that time, he faced criticism for his derogatory statements.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that the venue's security detained 23-year-old Isaiah Lee. The suspect is said to have pointed a handgun replica at Chappelle. He was then charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
