It has been a few years since Mike Myers last performed in front of an audience, but he is back with his first serious project since 2018. "The Pentaverate" was released on Netflix this past week and it did not register well among viewers or make their top 10 most viewed English language series chart for May 2nd through 8th.

Meanwhile, Rotten Tomatoes only provided the series with a 40% rating.

Some of the complaints about The Pentaverate include that it is not as funny as Austin Powers and that it does not live up to the expectations set by other recent spy spoofs such as Johnny English or Kingsman.

Others argue that the fast-paced nature of the show makes it difficult to follow along, and that the jokes often fall flat.

"The Pentaverate" Review - The Good and Bad

The show is a satirical take on the world of online conspiracy theorists, and it's both funny and creepy in equal measure. The plot centers on a group of five men who believe that they are destined to rule the world. They're not exactly sure how they're going to do it, but they're convinced that it's their destiny.

"The Pentaverate" is a dark comedy, and it's definitely not for everyone. But if you're looking for something different and you're not easily offended, it's definitely worth a watch.

We've interviewed a few experts and dug through the data to find out what people are saying about "The Pentaverate."

Here's what we've got:

"The Pentaverate just isn't very funny"

By Andrew Selepak, Media Professor at the University of Florida

It has been four years since Mike Myers had a small role in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rapsody and over a decade since his last major film role in Shrek Forever After voicing the green ogre.

The Pentaverate is Myers' first return to acting in a leading role since the critically reviled The Love Guru in 2008. In The Pentaverate, Myers is again wearing prosthetics to play multiple roles which all feel like the same character with slightly different accents. It is like Myers is only comfortable acting if he is wearing prosthetics which we have seen him do multiple times.

But if Mike Myers being Mike Myers under makeup and rubber were the only problem, the Netflix series might be more entertaining. The problem is The Pentaverate just isn't very funny, but does have its moments.

Jeremy Irons is hilarious in the opening credits and Keegan-Michael Key is funny in the first two episodes, but Myers, who plays eight characters in the series, often goes for the cheap laughs of fart jokes and one liners that amused audiences in the past.

The bigger problem is Myers return in a leading role seemed to be to make a tedious social statement that the cause of disinformation on social media today, and in traditional media in the past, is because people are stupid and willing to believe conspiracy theories rather than trusted sources in the media. This explains why the protagonist is a Canadian journalist and why in the post-credits Myers reveals in old footage he wanted to be a journalist.

If you like Mike Myers as an actor, you will like The Pentaverate. For the rest of us, there are other things on Netflix that don't include an entire scene where the Myers shows off his meat and two veg.

"It may require a deeper understanding and multiple rewatching to really get the humor of this show"

By Bianca Trembley, CEO and Founder, The Best Calgary

Even though this series is an obvious comedy, all thanks to Mike Myers' talent on display. We find that everyone might not see it as hilarious as you would expect. It may require a deeper understanding and multiple rewatching to really get the humor of this show. You can catch some silly jokes here and there, but not all episodes can make you laugh out loud. But it still gives a good laugh.

What I appreciate about this series is that, it gives a nostalgic feeling of the 90's. It's a fun show that pokes fun at everything without being too offensive.

I also like that it is showing awareness about the damage we are inflicting especially to our planet. It's a plus that they are giving that message to the viewers, and I hope others are able to notice and acknowledge it.

If you are a fan of Mike Myers and his work, like the Austin Powers, you will definitely appreciate this show.

This series is refreshing in a way. Aside from the wake up call and being tacky and slapstick, to me, this series has served its purpose, entertaining.

"It was not afraid to be offensive"

By Anonymous

So what did I think of The Pentaverate? I thought it was quite good!

I found the series to be very funny, and I liked the way that it poked fun at a lot of different things. I also appreciated the fact that it was not afraid to be offensive, and I think that this is something that is lacking in a lot of comedies nowadays.

I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of Mike Myers, or who is looking for a good laugh.

The acting was great, the writing was sharp, and the show had a unique premise that I hadn't seen before. That said, it's not a perfect show. There are a few plot holes and the ending is a bit of a letdown. But overall, I thought it was an enjoyable watch.

If you're looking for something different on Netflix, I would definitely recommend checking out The Pentaverate. It's not perfect, but it's definitely worth a watch.
