Selena Gomez Shares Powerful Statement About Mental Health During White House Speech
Selena Gomez braved everything to share what her mental health journey looks like.
For years, Gomez has been open about her struggles due to her mental health issues. She also spoke candidly about her bipolar disorder in several interviews.
This time, she appeared at the Mental Health Youth Action Forum at the White House to share information about mental health in pursuit of destigmatizing it.
On Wednesday, the 29-year-old "Love You Like a Love Song" singer took the podium and shared the story of her journey.
She was joined by First Lady Jill Biden, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Ambassador Susan Rice, and 30 more youth mental health activists at the event.
"Just to throw in a little bit of my journey, I felt like once I found out what was going on mentally, I found that there was more freedom for me to be okay with what I had, because I was learning about it. Bringing attention to mental health through media or just by talking about your journeys can help," she said.
Gomez reminded everyone that mental health should be discussed freely by everyone without a shame.
To help them, the singer expressed her desire to help provide mental health services to anyone regardless of their age, race, religion, and sexual orientation.
Selena Gomez Using Makeup Company to Promote Mental Health Advocacies
Elsewhere in her message, she detailed how her makeup company, Rare Beauty, promotes mental health awareness.
"My brand Rare Beauty and the Rare Impact Fund supports organizations that expand access to mental health services and education for young people," she said. "And we partner with mental health experts and non-profits throughout the year to share free educational resources."
Selena launched the Rare Impact Fund in July 2020, and one percent of all Rare Beauty sales are donated to the fund to support initiatives.
With that, she challenged companies to follow in their footsteps and take action to destigmatize mental health.
Gomez previously revealed to Miley Cyrus' quarantine online show, called "Bright Minded: Live With Miley," that she has bipolar disorder. She also revealed that her attending physician explained her mental health status further, and that helped her not to be scared of it anymore.
In 2016, Selena's then-plummeting mental health status caused her to cancel the rest of her Revival tour to let herself heal first.
