Darwin Encarnacion, who famously became a minor league prospect in the Mets, died in a horrifying way. He was 21.

Multiple news outlets confirmed the tragic passing of the young athlete. MLB Insider Hector Gomez initially disclosed that Encarnacion got involved in a terrifying car crash in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old was purportedly driving an SUV when he drove it off a bridge.

He did not die from the initial impact. But Darwin Encarnacion's final cause of death was due to the injuries he sustained from the crash. He was still rushed to a local hospital, Luis Manuel Morillo King Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The local news outlet, El Nuevo Diario (via Eldia) shared a video of Encarnacion's car after the wreck. Gomez also shared the same post in a tweet.

An executive for the Dominican Republic's Mets team has since paid tribute to the late athlete, telling Gomez that Encarnacion was a good person.

"He was a great human being, very disciplined, respectful and polite. He played with us for just one year, in 2019. He was even using his scholarship that the team gave him when he signed and was currently studying at university," the representative said, per New York Post.

There is no confirmation whether the authorities will conduct an investigation to look into what happened before the incident occurred. Encarnacion's family is also yet to release an official statement.

Encarnacion notably appeared in 35 games during the Dominican Summer League in 2019. At that time, he hit .248 with a .651 OPS in 129 plate appearances with his team.

He was released in 2020 but continued playing in other games afterward.
