Camille Vasquez Reveals Why Johnny Depp Counterattacked Amber Heard's Appeal
Johnny Depp's star lawyer, Camille Vasquez, addressed Amber Heard's recent appeal filing and why they decided to appeal, as well.
Depp's team counterattacked Heard's recent filing to overturn the defamation ruling by appealing the $2 million verdict awarded to the actress.
Speaking in the recent interview with Gayle King on "CBS Mornings" on Thursday, Vasquez said that they would not be seeking to appeal if Heard did not challenge the recent jury verdict. For what it's worth, the "Aquaman" star now attempts to overturn the ruling after the court finally ordered her to pay the damages to Depp.
Still, Vasquez said they were not surprised that Heard did it.
"We did. Mr. Depp filed his own appeal so the court could have the full record. And - she insists on continuing to litigate this matter, and we have to protect our client's interest," she said, as quoted by ET Online. "We are just hopeful that the court will uphold the verdict, which we think was the right verdict, and allow both parties to move on."
The star lawyer said that they aim to protect the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor's interests so they responded to the appeal with another appeal.
Johnny Depp Specifically Wanted Camille Vasquez In His Legal Team
Amid the continuous legal battle, Vasquez also explained why it was important for Depp to have a woman on the team for his high-profile defamation case.
Per the lawyer, the case was called for a woman's perspective, and she just became lucky to represent the actor.
"I think hard work and luck - you can't underestimate there was a combination there. Of course, it's a tremendous amount of hours, but it's also a little bit of luck, and it's not a job that I took lightly. This was his name, this was his life. It was important," she told King when asked if she felt lucky and if it was the correct word to describe it.
Vasquez indeed played a huge role in the trial as she managed to make Heard admit that the op-ed was about Depp.
In the now-viral clips on social media sites, Heard told the court that she wrote the op-ed for The Washington Post to see and prove that many people would support Depp despite her allegations.
"I know how many people will come out and say whatever for him. That's his power. That's why I wrote the op-ed. I was speaking to that phenomenon, (about) how many people will come out in support of him and will fall to his power. He is a very powerful man and people love currying favor with powerful men," she continuously explained.
With that, Depp's team scored another step toward victory.
