Shia LaBeouf's Second Life: Actor Reveals What Saved Him From 'Deep Shame'
"Just do it!" speech motivator Shia LaBeouf gets vulnerable about his mental health and reveals how his beliefs saved his life.
In a recent episode of "Bishop Barron Presents", the "Transformers" actor talked about one of the darkest points in his life and reflected on how religion pulled him out of it.
LaBeouf, who came from a Jewish and Christian household, revealed that he had converted to Catholicism in 2019. This decision stemmed from his upcoming role as priest Francesco Forgione in the biopic, "Padre Pio". A part of his preparation included staying at a seminary in San Lorenzo.
"It was seeing other people who have sinned beyond anything I could ever conceptualize also being found in Christ that made me feel like, 'Oh, that gives me hope,'" LaBeouf explained. "I started hearing experiences of other depraved people who had found their way in this, and it made me feel like I had permission."
According to the 36 year old actor, he had been in a "deep shame" that made him feel lost amidst his personal life and acting career. During this time, LaBeouf had been drawn to spirituality while internally battling his thoughts of suicide.
"I had a gun on the table. I was outta here," LaBeouf detailed. "I didn't want to be alive anymore when all this happened. Shame like I had never experienced before-the kind of shame that you forget how to breathe. You don't know where to go."
