Danny DeVito Compares 'Batman' Rendition To Collin Farrell's: 'My Penguin Was Better'
Who's the better penguin? Danny DeVito, who played the iconic antagonist in "Batman Returns", claims that he wins the villain showdown over Collin Farrell.
The actor-filmmaker is best known for his role in the 1992 film "Batman Returns" as Oswald Cobblepot, AKA "The Penguin". In the recent DC film "The Batman" starring Robert Pattinson, actor Collin Farrell plays the iconic antagonist.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the 77 year old actor, alongside his daughter Lucy DeVito, play a lie detector test game. From favorite daughters to boy bands, random questions were thrown until DeVito was asked about his thoughts on Collin Farrell's portrayal of "The penguin.
The "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" actor honestly answered that he thinks Farrell is a "terrific guy", before admitting his personal opinion.
"I love Collin. He's a terrific guy. My Penguin was better." DeVito admitted, to which his daughter laughed. "Was that the truth? It most certainly was. In my opinion."
Differences between DeVito and Farrell's Penguin
Considering the DC comics has expanded to many different cinematic universes, DeVito and Farrell's version of the penguin are very different from each other.
DeVito's portrayal of "The Penguin" in "Batman Returns" was created by Tim Burton, with a pointed nose, flipper hands, and doned his signature top-hat. Burton's version of the villain leans toward a "misunderstood monster" raised in the sewers. Meanwhile, Farrell's "The Penguin" is a crime boss who initially served under the Falcone Crime Syndicate in Gotham city, overseeing the production of the spreading narcotic, Drops.
The Fans' Verdict?
True to his claim, many fans have hailed DeVito's performance for decades, even citing him as "the best live-action batman villain".
"The Penguin has speech pattern differences, a unique way of walking, and a generally chaotic demeanor that are all captured perfectly by DeVito." According to a review by MovieWeb.
Despite a majority of fans preferring DeVito's performance, many still note that Farrell's "The Penguin" hold more versatility and matches well with the realism in Matt Reeve's DC film universe.
DeVito grew to fame as an actor-comedian and later on made his directoral debut in "The Ratings Game". He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture for "Erin Brockovich". Meanwhile, Collins Farrell was nominated as Best Supporting Actor in the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.
