What Was Maury Wills Cause of Death? Legendary LA Dodgers Shortstop Dead at 89
Maury Wills, a legendary Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop, died at his home this week, the team confirmed. He was 89.
Los Angeles Dodgers shared the saddening news on Tuesday, as reported by Deadline, saying that Wills passed away at his Sedona home on September 19.
The team, however, did not confirm Maury Wills' cause of death. It remains unknown whether he suffered from a health issue or if he died peacefully.
ESPN revealed that the Dodgers would wear a patch this season to remember Wills' legacy and life.
"Maury Wills was one of the most exciting Dodgers of all time. He changed baseball with his baserunning and made the stolen base an important part of the game. He was very instrumental in the success of the Dodgers with three world championships," team president and CEO Stan Kasten said.
Meanwhile, manager Dave Roberts tried containing his tears while recalling his memories with the late athlete. According to Roberts, Wills showed him how he should appreciate his passion while working to become a big leaguer.
Aside from his colleagues, other teams and fans also paid tribute to Wills online.
Maury Wills' Career in the League
Wills had a fruitful career throughout his 14 seasons in the majors. He first played for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1959 to 1966 before returning in 1970 until 1972.
Aside from the team, he also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Montreal Expos.
Among the milestones he reached, he famously led the National League in stolen bases from 1960 to 1965. In 1962, he scored the MVP title for having .299 with 10 triples, 104 stolen bases, and 48 RBI.

He initially held a record of 208 hits, but it was broken by Ty Cobb afterward.
Wills also served as the manager of the Seattle Mariners. However, he was criticized during his stint due to his lack of experience. He admitted that his plans at that time did not go as planned at all and that he should have had truly sought more experience before going to the big leagues.
Outside the league, he worked as an analyst at NBC for five years.
Details about his funeral remain unknown. Wills' family is yet to release a statement regarding his passing, as well.
