Olivia Wilde breaks down an important inspiration behind the utopia in "Don't Worry Darling".
"Don't Worry Darling", directed by Olivia Wilde, explores the issues surrounding feminism and how the patriarchy refuses to progress by creating the "ideal" community for alpha males. Florence Pugh portrays the main character Alice, a 1950s housewife, and her husband Jack, who is portrayed by Harry Styles.
However, Olivia Wilde reveals one of the inspirations behind the utopian company town of Victory, California.
Donald Trump Inspired 'Don't Worry Darling'?
In a recent cover interview with Elle magazine, the 38-year-old director broke down the elements that influenced the making of "The Victory Project" in California, the idyllic town where the film was set. According to Olivia Wilde, quotes from politician Donald Trump had been noted on their film board as his ideologies became one of the political undertones of the film.
"We had a bunch of Trump quotes up on our board when we were writing the script, and there was this gross tendency of Trump's to be very nostalgic about a better time," Wilde explained to Elle. "What these men are referring to is a time that was horrific for anyone who wasn't a straight white cis man."

Patriarchal Villain in 'Don't Worry Darling'
Additionally, Olivia Wilde revealed in an Interview cover story that the main antagonist portrayed by Chris Pine, who founded the utopian community called the "Victory Project", was based on renowned psychologist Jordan Peterson. Wilde referred to the 60-year-old conservative psychologist as a "pseudo-intellectual hero to the incel community".
"They believe that society has now robbed them - that the idea of feminism is working against nature, and that we must be put back into the correct place," Wilde explained in a past interview. "This guy Jordan Peterson is someone that legitimizes certain aspects of their movement because he's a former professor, he's an author, he wears a suit, so they feel like this is a real philosophy that should be taken seriously."
Wilde's "Don't Worry Darling" has garnered praise among critics since its nationwide premiere on September 23, earning a whopping $19.2 million at the domestic box office during its first week. The film stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, and more.
