"Waking up to the terrible news that our friend, and legend @tobykeith has passed away from cancer. He was a true Patriot, a first class singer/songwriter, and a bigger than life kind of guy. He will be greatly missed," country music star John Rich wrote on Twitter, now known as X.

Fellow country singer Randy Houser commented on Instagram: "God bless you and family. Hard to imagine an America without Toby Keith in it."

The multi-platinum-selling singer gave a calming performance at the 2023 People's Choice Country Awards, where he gracefully performed "Don't Let the Old Man In."

He was seemingly in good spirits accepting the Country Icon Award, opening his speech by joking, "I bet ya'll never thought you'd see me in skinny jeans."

The "Should've Been a Cowboy" singer leaves behind three children; Shelley, Krystal and Stelen. He is survived by his mother and two siblings.
