During Sunday night's Academy Awards, the sequel to 'Into the Spider-Verse,' 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,' faced defeat against Hayao Miyazaki's 'The Boy and the Heron' in the Best Animated Feature Film category. Shameik Moore, the voice behind Miles Morales (Spider-Man) in the franchise, expressed his discontent on X (formerly known as Twitter), declaring that the film was "robbed."
Moore, 28, later clarified his stance, taking to Twitter to add context.
"Respect to the winners. It's true, I'm definitely a sore loser, but we didn't lose, Spiderverse has impacted ALOT of lives, we may not have been acknowledged tonight but life goes on, and BEYOND..... yea get ready," he wrote.
Numerous replies flooded in, highlighting that the Sony animated movie lost to a critically acclaimed film created by a "legend." Commenters urged Moore to show respect for Miyazaki's work instead.
In response to a commenter mentioning how Spider-Verse producer Chris Miller gracefully acknowledged defeat — "Well, if you're gonna lose, might as well lose to the GOAT [Hayao Miyazaki]" — Moore concurred.
"Your [sic] right, honestly the whole Spiderverse team are such good sports.," he wrote. "Very professional and I'm excited to see what comes of this. I'm young, and a fighter, so forgive my nature. Congrats to the winners."
Despite 'Across the Spider-Verse' leaving the 2024 Oscars without any accolades, the inaugural film in the animated franchise emerged victorious in the Oscars category back in 2019.
According to Variety, the film grossed over $690 million worldwide.
