Meghan Markle Called 'Rude' After Turning Her Back On A Woman Speaking To Her During Nigeria Trip [Watch]
Meghan Markle received an intense backlash after a clip of her seemingly ignoring a woman of color during her and Prince Harry's trip to Nigeria made the rounds online.
The Duke and Duchess received an invite to visit the African country and obliged with a three-day trip. They received a warm welcome from the locals when they landed on Friday. But one video that made the rounds on social media raised some eyebrows because the netizens felt that Markle was ignoring a woman talking to her and a female student who seemingly offered them something. The clip was taken during their first day in Nigeria when they visited Lightway Academy in Abuja.
"She turned her back on them while they were still talking," one netizen wrote while sharing a clip of the awkward encounter on X, formerly Twitter.
"OMG, she is so rude! Woman has a WTF hand gesture, and she's back to dragging him away from people because she can't be arsed to engage with them. Ah well, on the bright side, there's no RF to clean up after this tour for them!" One commenter remarked.
Another added, "She is so rude [face vomiting emoji]. [T]he lady was still talking to her and the girls waiting to be seen. Nasty [face vomiting emoji]"
"#MeghanMarkle being RUDE here to her Nigerian sister and the little girl!! Offensive. She snubbed both ladies. I hoped so the other lady would teach her some Nigerians kind of manners in her face," a third user wrote.
"That sweet child presenting something to them on the tray is completely ignored. SMH. That's just NASTY!!" a different user opined
"Wow. All for women/girls/people of color, and she turns her back on them
Her true colors show, don't they, and [it's] not her 43% Nigerian," another user claimed.
Despite the backlash, there was an outpour of love and support from the Sussex supporters who believed that the visit turned out great and that there was no drama at all. They even thanked the Nigerians for their hospitality toward the royal couple.
"I woke up happy... Thank you, Nigeria for the love you have showed (sic) Harry and Meghan. As them (sic) head home today, may God keep them safe back home to the babies," one wrote.
Another added, "Thank you for being so gracious and welcoming Nigeria. Your warmness, gratitude, friendship and love towards Harry and Meghan [have] been lovely to see."
"Nigeria!!! How can we thank you for being so kind to Meghan and Harry!!!? The Sussex squad should definitely start some kind of donation to some organization in Nigeria. Their love have [sic] brought me to tears," a third Sussex fan commented.
"After what that family and their minions put her through, it's heartwarming to see such outpouring of love, welcome and support shown to Meghan and Harry by her people of Nigeria," a different supporter opined.
In related news, royal experts likened Prince Harry and Markle's visit to Nigeria to an official royal tour. Jack Royston, chief royal correspondent at Newsweek, told the Sun that it was "very close to an old-school royal tour."
Robert Jobson, a British journalist, writer and author, also felt the same. However, for him, it was a "missed opportunity" because the Sussexes no longer have that much reach compared to when they were still working royals.
