The buddy-cop series, which stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, was originally conceived with different actors in mind according to the 'Atlanta Black Star.'

In the original ideation of the film, creators had Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz to play the leading characters. However, according to Smith, who appeared on 'The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,' the two actors had insurmountable scheduling conflicts. He cited that due to Carvey's schedule, the two would have had to delay the film for four months.

Smith also explained how Lawrence, 59, was casted first. "They had a green light to make the movie... and Martin was first...and Martin actually picked me."
