Tamayo Perry, known both as a lifeguard and an actor, died after a shark attack.

He was 49.

On Sunday, Perry, who served as a lifeguard for the City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety, was critically injured while surfing near the island of Oahu in Hawaii, according to the 'Associated Press.'

During a press conference, Shayne Enright from the Honolulu Emergency Services Department confirmed reports of a surfer being attacked near Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu's North Shore shortly before 1 p.m. local time.

"This is [an] extremely difficult time for all of us," Enright said. He also confirmed that Honolulu Ocean Safety responded to the incident by jet ski and brought Perry to shore. Honolulu EMS personnel then "assisted with his death pronouncement," Enright stated during the press conference.

Perry appeared in films including 'Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' (2011) and 'Blue Crush' (2002) along with other projects.

At a press conference, Honolulu Ocean Safety Acting Chief Kurt Lager described Perry as "a lifeguard loved by all."
