PEOPLE confirmed on Tuesday, June 25, that Ezra will no longer be a regular cast member on All American after six seasons, although he reassured fans that he plans to return as a guest star in the future.

"After making the difficult decision to leave All American, my sole focus became completing the journey of the most life-affirming character I've ever played in the manner he deserves," Ezra stated in a release. "Thanks to [EP] Nkechi and the writers, I got my wish. Season 6 is 'Spencer's goodbye.'"

He continued, expressing, "I'll miss him. I'll miss our cast and crew. I hope it's been as fun to watch him as it has been to play him."

The announcement came just a day before a new episode of the current season six aired, offering a glimpse into Ezra's character's future. Following his NFL draft selection, the episode portrayed Spencer in the Super Bowl and depicted his engagement to Olivia (played by Samantha Logan).

Executive producer Nkechi Okoro Carroll commended Daniel Ezra, who has also directed multiple episodes of All American since its first season, for his contributions to the show.

"Partnering with Daniel Ezra over the last six seasons to bring Spencer's story to life has been such an amazing, fulfilling, experience," Carroll remarked in a statement. "Daniel truly is a gift and brought so much to the character on and off the field."

Carroll emphasized, "And while Spencer has achieved his NFL dreams, I'm grateful Daniel will still remain an important part of this family, both in front of and behind the camera as we step into a new, exciting chapter of All American."

The sixth season of the CW's popular sports drama, its highest-rated series, has centered around themes of fresh starts for its characters. As the season approaches its conclusion with two remaining episodes, fans will witness Ezra's character, Spencer, navigating wedding plans with Olivia, culminating in the season finale on Monday, July 15.
