King Charles Will Have A 'Big Problem' If Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Become Working Royals Again: Expert
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are no longer popular in the United Kingdom, and their return to being working royals will only be a "big problem" for King Charles, according to an expert.
The Duke of Sussex has been open about his interest in reconciling with his family. Several reports claimed earlier this year that he offered to return to his royal duties temporarily after his father announced his cancer diagnosis in February. Cameron Walker, royal correspondent for GB News, weighed in on the possibility of the Sussexes returning as working royals and how it could affect His Majesty's reign.
"In terms of becoming working members of the Royal Family again, I don't think it would be up to King Charles -- look at the opinion polls of Harry and Meghan on both sides of the Atlantic," he said on GB News' podcast "The Royal Record."
"That's a big problem because if they become working members of the Royal Family again, it's taxpayers -- it's us as the public -- who would have to pay for their security, the staff travel, and all the rest of it."
As for Markle's part, he believes that the former actress has no interest in resuming her royal duties. According to Walker, Prince Harry's wife has been open about her "dislike" of serving the monarchy.
"I don't think they want -- well, I don't think Meghan wants -- to be a working member of the Royal Family again because clearly she disliked it so much last time. She talked about it at length during the Oprah Winfrey interview -- so I don't see that happening," he added.
Walker was also asked about Prince Harry's potential return, given that three working royals had to step back. King Charles and Kate Middleton are undergoing cancer treatment, while Princess Anne was hospitalized recently due to an incident with a horse. Just like Markle, Walker thinks the "Spare" author has no intention of being a working royal again.
"I don't think it's to do with we're losing members of the Royal Family temporarily, such as the Princess of Wales and Princess Anne," Walker explained. "I think he's trying to go it alone. I don't think this is him trying to become a working member of the Royal Family again. I think he is pretty happy in California from the messages we are getting from him, but clearly, it is a huge frustration."
